Philoptochos is sponsoring a Shower for our new Church kitchen and hall. Our goal is to stock them with items that are needed as we move into our brand new space. We are inviting everyone to “Shower” our kitchen/hall with items that we have listed in our gift registry. We have consulted with our experts… our Sunday Luncheon cooks and Philoptochos members to put together the list. The registry provides you the opportunity to sponsor the purchase of commercial grade pots, pans, bowls, knives, trays, utensils, coffee urns, other kitchen items, and chairs/tables for the hall. The registry is similar to a bridal registry… it includes the list of items along with the cost per item, how many of each item are requested, and how many of that item have been purchased. If you prefer, you may make a monetary donation which will be used to purchase items not gifted. Philoptochos will collect all the gift donations and make the actual purchase of the items. To select your Shower Gift, please do the following:
  1. Click on the link: Kitchen Shower Registry

  2. Pick the item(s) that you wish to give, noting the “Item Number(s)” in front of each gift listed

  3. Email [email protected] and provide (1) your name, (2) the Item Number(s) that you want to gift, and (3) the total amount of item(s)

  4. Send your check made out to “PHILOPTOCHOS” and note “Shower” in the memo line to:

March 3, 2020 – New Church Building Project Update

By the Grace of God and under the leadership of Fr. Nicholas Louh, construction of the St. John the Divine (SJTD) new Church Campus on Beach Boulevard, just east of the intersection at Kernan Boulevard, began in November, 2018 and is scheduled to be completed in Spring of 2020. Our Church Campus will include a Byzantine Crucifix-form sanctuary for worship services, chapel, bell tower, banquet hall, and an administrative/education building. The new SJTD Early Learning Center will be located in the education building and is scheduled to open by Summer, 2020. The campus will also include an airnasium and grassed area for sporting and outdoor activities and events, including our Greek Festival along with our Easter Picnic and other community events. Videos of the current progress of construction are provided below.

Sauer Incorporated is our design/build contractor, providing both the design, engineering and construction services for the project. The estimated cost of the new Church Campus is approximately $13.8 million. We encourage those who have not given previously, or those who are in a position to give additional gifts over and above what they have so graciously given in the past to please do so online by clicking here, Athena Mann at [email protected], Steve Bacalis at [email protected], or Father Nicholas [email protected].

The Mission of SJTD is to proclaim the Holy Gospel by teaching and spreading the Orthodox Christian Faith in a dynamic and welcoming community devoted to serving all people who seek a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. It has been a long journey to reach this point in building His new home… but God has truly blessed our Community. We look forward to the completion of our new Church Campus and the opportunities it will provide us to create new ministries and programs that aim to bring people closer to Christ and to each other. May God continue to bless and guide us during this exciting time in the life of our Community.

With Love in Christ,

Nick Furris, Chairman, Millennium Building Committee
Steve Bacalis, Capital Campaign Co-chair
Athena Mann, Capital Campaign Co-chair

End of Year Giving Opportunity…

Just a reminder about just one great opportunity to make a charitable gift to the Church before the end of the year. If you are 70½ or older, you may be interested in a way to lower the income and taxes from your IRA withdrawals. An IRA charitable rollover is a way you can support the Church and benefit this year.

In the past, Congress used to wait until December to extend the law that allows those over the age 70½ to make a tax free donation of up to $100,000 from their IRA to a charity. Good news… a year ago Congress made this law permanent. The donation counts towards your required minimum distribution, but does not increase your income, which can be particularly helpful if you do not itemize deductions or if you’re trying to stay below the Medicare “High Income” surcharge, or even if you’re trying to make less of your social security benefit taxable.

The donation has to be made directly from your IRA to the charity and now that the law is permanent, most IRA administrators have simplified the process and can accommodate your request either by a standardized form or in some cases, may even give you check writing privileges.

We ask that you prayerfully consider how you would like to give to SJTD and as always, consult your financial advisor or tax planner. When you are ready to make the transfer, please contact George Stavros (Treasurer) at [email protected]
